Networks move phones between sectors, LTE and 5G layers, and different frequency bands to balance coverage and capacity. Each connection can have a different received-power range.
A handoff can happen while standing still because network load, interference and radio conditions change around you. The status bar may also update after the underlying measurement has already moved.
Small changes can alter indoor signal
Walls, metal, coated glass, people and even the way the phone is held can affect a weak radio path. Reflections can strengthen one position and weaken another only a short distance away.
- Compare with the phone resting in the same orientation.
- Keep doors and windows in the same state during a test.
- Record the network type as well as the number of bars.
- Use several readings instead of reacting to one change.
Use dBm and performance for a better comparison
Field Test Mode readings provide numerical context such as RSRP. Pair those readings with RSRQ or SINR when available, because power alone does not describe interference.
Run a speed test only after the radio has settled for a moment. Repeat it to see whether the changing bars correspond to a real performance problem.
